Potassium Nitrate (Crystal)

Other Names:
Saltpeter.
IUPAC Name:
Potassium Nitrate

General Introduction of Potassium Nitrate:

This substance with KNO3 chemical formula exists in nature in the form of white powder. This chemical material is also seen in the form of potassium mineral nitrate crystal salt in white or grey. This substance is used in agriculture because of containing some nitrogen and its explosive property is used in incendiary materials. Its other uses in industries are as intermediate or catalyst.
Very important: pure potassium nitrate is highly flammable and may explode due to thermal shock or strike.

– Usage:

  • In Chemical Industries: From its mineral material in the purifying process nitric acid produces. Nitric acid is produced from the combination of sulfuric acid with nitrates such as impure potassium nitrate salt.
  • Blast Explosive Production: It is one of the basic materials of gunpowder and operates as an oxidant.
  • Food Industries: It has an effective role in some meat processing even though some chemical salts operate better on a large scale.
  • In Health Industries: Potassium nitrate is used in toothpastes as a resolver of aphthous stomatitis.

– Maintenance:

Keep in dry and cool place, out of interaction with other chemical materials such as acids and corrosive substances.
Do not expose to sunlight and direct heat due to possibility of decomposing into potassium nitrite.
Consume up to two years after production.

Warnings:

  • Avoid taking the material orally, in the case of swallow seek medical advice as soon as possible.
  • In the case of contact with eyes rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice as soon as possible. (its dust causes temporary damage to eyes)
  • Avoid mixing with acidic or corrosive chemical materials.
  • Prevent water or steam from reaching the product.
  • In the case of failure to follow safety tips and causing fire, the resultant fire is a chemical fire and should not be extinguished with water only.
